The Oldie

The Oldie

Mongoose Media invests in The Oldie

The Oldie

A Getty family trust has sold The Oldie, the irreverent magazine founded and edited by Richard Ingrams, to three investors led by James Pembroke, its former business manager who resurrected the magazine as a monthly after it was temporarily closed in 1994. The late Sir Paul Getty had bought the magazine in 2001 from Naim Attallah, its original backer. Since then, the magazine has gone from strength to strength.

The Oldie was founded by Richard Ingrams, in 1992, as an antidote to an anodyne press obsessed with the non-achievements and non-sayings of "yoof." The magazine boasts some of the UK's best writers (including Ned Sherrin, Miles Kington, Beryl Bainbridge and Rosie Boycott), all of whom delight in this platform of non-conformity.

"I worked with Richard on The Oldie for five years in the 90s" says James Pembroke, 40, who has his own magazine publishing company in Bath, "and am truly delighted to be involved with my favourite magazine again. The growing obsession with celebrities and reality TV proves how prescient Richard was in 1992. The Oldie has a real chance to build its circulation by reaching all of us who yearn for independent thinking and irreverent writing, something we all sadly associate with a bygone age."

Richard Ingrams says: 'I am delighted to be working with James Pembroke again - he is the most pro-active man I know'

The other investors are Richard Beatty and Graham Paling of Mongoose Media, the UK's largest ad sales agency, and David Kowitz, the American founder of the hedge fund, Indus Capital Partners. Richard Beatty will be directing the magazine's ad sales team whereas David will just be happy to attend the magazine's literary lunches, at Simpson's.
